The Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities Sibiu was established in 1956 in order to promote the history and culture of the Romanians and Germans from Transylvania and to continue and complete the research projects started a century ago. Among the fundamental objectives of the institute are the study of the history and specifics of the Romanian cities in the European context, the deepening of our knowledge about the history and culture of the Romanians and Germans from Transylvania, integrating the Transylvanian characteristics in the history and culture of the European and Romanian space and studying the national and regional particularities of our present-day society.

Research institution par excellence, with a history of almost 60 years, ICSU "Gheorghe Şincai", has as main mission the research of the history of Transylvanian civilization and culture in relation to the specific features of the area, as a space of ethnic and religious interference. It is focused on researching history and philology in the Transilvania area, from the 18th to the 20th centuries.

The Institute in conducting research activities in the field of physical chemistry, with working groups specialized in X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, High Performance Computing in Material Science and Catalytic processes and materials.

The “Constantin Brăiloiu” Institute of Ethnography and Folklore is a multidisciplinary research structure, with a socio-human orientation. Its main task is to develop fundamental and advanced studies on the phenomenon of traditional and contemporary popular culture, rural and urban, in the fields of folklore (literary folklore), ethnomusicology, ethnography, ethnochoreology and multimedia archives, unconventional, folklore.
